1.
Forty days and forty nights you were fasting in the wild; forty days and forty nights tempted, and yet undefiled. Shall not we Your sorrow share and from worldly joys abstain, fasting with unceasing prayer, strong with You to suffer pain? Then if Satan on us press, flesh or spirit to assail, Victor in the wilderness, grant that we not faint nor fail! So shall we have peace divine; holier gladness ours shall be; round us, too, shall angels shine, such as served You faithfully. Keep, O keep us, Savior dear, ever constant by Your side; that with You we may appear at the eternal Eastertide.
2.
Alas! And did my Savior bleed, and did my Sovereign die! Would He devote that sacred head for sinners such as I! Was it for sins that I have done He suffered on the tree? Amazing pity! Grace unknown! And love beyond degree! Well might the sun in darkness hide, and shut its glories in, when Christ, the great Redeemer, died for human creatures' sin. But drops of grief can ne'er repay the debt of love I owe; here, Lord, I give myself away; 'tis all that I can do.
3.
All glory, laud, and honor to Thee, Redeemer, King! To whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring. Thou art the King of Israel, Thou David's royal Son, Who in the Lord's name comest, the King and blessed One. All glory, laud, and honor to Thee, Redeemer, King! To whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring. The people of the Hebrews with palms before Thee went; our praise and prayers and anthems before Thee we present. All glory, laud, and honor to Thee, Redeemer, King! To whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring. To Thee, before Thy passion, they sang their hymns of praise; to Thee, now high exalted, our melody we raise. All glory, laud, and honor to Thee, Redeemer, King! To whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring. Thou didst accept their praises; accept the prayers we bring, who in all good delightest, Thou good and gracious King! All glory, laud, and honor to Thee, Redeemer, King! To whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring.

Beneath the cross of Jesus I fain would take my stand, the shadow of a mighty rock within a weary land; a home within the wilderness, a rest upon the way, from the burning of the noontide heat and the burden of the day. Upon the cross of Jesus mine eye at times can see the very dying form of One who suffered there for me; and from my stricken heart with tears, two wonders I confess: the wonders of redeeming love and my unworthiness.
5.
Low in the grave He lay, Jesus my Savior! Waiting the coming day, Jesus my Lord! Up from the grave He arose, with a mighty triumph o'er His foes! He arose a victor from the dark domain, and He lives forever with His saints to reign! He arose! He arose! Hallelujah, Christ arose! Vainly they watch His bed, Jesus my Savior! Vainly they seal the dead, Jesus my Lord! Up from the grave He arose, with a mighty triumph o'er His foes! He arose a victor from the dark domain, and He lives forever with His saints to reign! He arose! He arose! Hallelujah, Christ arose! Death cannot keep his prey, Jesus my Savior! He tore the bars away, Jesus my Lord! Up from the grave He arose, with a mighty triumph o'er His foes! He arose a victor from the dark domain, and He lives forever with His saints to reign! He arose! He arose! Hallelujah, Christ arose!
6.
Christ Jesus lay in death's strong bands for our offenses given; but now at God's right hand Christ stands and gives us life from Heaven; therefore let us joyful be and sing to God right thankfully loud songs of allelujah! Allelujah! It was a strange and dreadful strife when life and death contended; the victory remained with life; the reign of death was ended. Holy Scripture plainly saith that death is swallowed up by death; its sting is lost forever! Allelujah! Then let us feast this Easter Day on the true bread of heaven; the Word of grace hath purged away the old and wicked leaven. Christ alone our souls will feed; Christ is our meat and drink indeed; faith lives upon no other! Allelujah!
7.
Come, ye faithful, raise the strain of triumphant gladness; God hath brought forth Israel into joy from sadness; loosed from Pharaoh's bitter yoke Jacob's sons and daughters; led them, with unmoistened foot, through the Red Sea waters. 'Tis the spring of souls today; Christ hath burst His prison, and from three days' sleep in death as a sun hath risen. Now rejoice, Jerusalem, and with true affection welcome in unwearied strains Jesus' resurrection!
8.
Go to dark Gethsemane, all who feel the tempter's power; your Redeemer's conflict see, watch with Him one bitter hour; trun not from His griefs away, learn from Jesus Christ to pray. Follow to the judgement hall; view the Lord of life arraigned; O the wormwood and the gall! O the pangs His soul sustained! Shun not suffering, shame, or loss; learn from Christ to bear the cross. Calvary's mournful mountain climb; there, adoring at His feet, mark the miracle of time, God's own sacrifice complete; "It is finished!" hear Him cry; learn from Jesus Christ to die. Early hasten to the tomb where they laid His breathless clay; all is solitude and gloom. Who has taken Him away? Christ is risen! He meets our eyes. Savior, teach us so to rise.
9.
They crucified my Lord, and He never said a mumblin' word; they crucified my Lord, and He never said a mumblin' word. Not a word, not a word, not a word. They nailed Him to a tree, and He never said a mumblin' word; they nailed Him to a tree, and He never said a mumblin' word. Not a word, not a word, not a word. They pierced Him in the side, and He never said a mumblin' word; they pierced Him in the side, and He never said a mumblin' word. Not a word, not a word, not a word. The blood came tricklin' down, and He never said a mumblin' word; the blood came tricklin' down, and He never said a mumblin' word. Not a word, not a word, not a word. He bowed His head and died, and He never said a mumblin' word; He bowed His head and died, and He never said a mumblin' word. Not a word, not a word, not a word.
10.
Hosanna, loud hosanna, the little children sang; through pillared court and temple the joyful anthem rang; to Jesus, who had blessed them close folded to His breast, the children sang their praises, the simplest and the best. From Olivet they followed 'mid an exultant crowd, the victor palm branch waving, and chanting clear and loud; the Lord of earth and heaven rode on in lowly state, nor scorned that little children should on His bidding wait. "Hosanna in the highest!" that ancient song we sing, for Christ is our Redeemer, the Lord of heaven our King. O may we ever praise Him with heart and life and voice, and in His blissful presence eternally rejoice.
11.
In the cross of Christ I glory, towering o'er the wrecks of time; all the light of sacred story gathers round its head sublime. When the woes of life o'ertake me, hopes deceive, and fears annoy, never shall the cross forsake me: Lo! it glows with peace and joy. When the sun of bliss is beaming light and love upon my way, from the cross the radiance streaming adds more luster to the day. Bane and blessing, pain and pleasure, by the cross are sanctified; peace is there that knows no measure, joys that through all time abide.
12.
Jesus Christ is risen today, alleluia! Our triumphant holy day, alleluia! Who did once upon the cross, alleluia! Suffer to redeem our loss. Alleluia! Hymns of praise then let us sing, alleluia! Unto Christ, our heavenly King, alleluia! Who endured the cross and grave, alleluia! Sinners to redeem and save. Alleluia! But the pains which He endured, alleluia! Our salvation have procured; alleluia! Now above the sky He's King, alleluia! Where the angels ever sing. Alleluia! Sing we to our God above, alleluia! Praise eternal as God's love; alleluia! Praise our God, ye heavenly host, alleluia! Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia!
13.
Jesus walked this lonesome valley; He had to walk it by Himself. O, nobody else could walk it for Him; He had to walk it by Himself. We must walk this lonesome valley; we have to walk it by ourselves. O, nobody else can walk it for us; we have to walk it by ourselves. You must go and stand your trial; you have to stand it by yourself. O, nobody else can stand it for you; you have to stand it by yourself.
14.
Lord, who throughout these forty days for us didst fast and pray, teach us with Thee to mourn our sins, and close by Thee to stay. As Thou with Satan didst contend, and didst the victory win, O give us strength in Thee to fight, in Thee to conquer sin. And through these days of penitence, and through Thy Passiontide, yea, evermore, in life and death, O Lord, with us abide. Abide with us, that so, this life of suffering overpast, an Easter of unending joy we may attain at last!
15.
O Lamb of God most holy! Who on the cross did suffer, and patient still and lowly, Yourself to scorn did offer; our sins by You were taken, or hope had us forsaken: have mercy on us, Jesus! O Lamb of God most holy! Who on the cross did suffer, and patient still and lowly, Yourself to scorn did offer; our sins by You were taken, or hope had us forsaken: have mercy on us, Jesus! O Lamb of God most holy! Who on the cross did suffer, and patient still and lowly, Yourself to scorn did offer; our sins by You were taken, or hope had us forsaken: Your peace be with us, Jesus!
16.
O sacred head, now wounded, with grief and shame weighed down; now scornfully surrounded with thorns thine only crown; O sacred head, what glory, what bliss till now was Thine! Yet, though despised and gory, I joy to call Thee mine. What Thou, my Lord, hast suffered was all for sinners' gain: mine, mine was the transgression, but Thine the deadly pain. Lo, here I fall, my Savior! 'Tis I deserve Thy place; look on me with Thy favor, vouchsafe to me Thy grace. What language shall I borrow to thank Thee, dearest friend, for this Thy dying sorrow, Thy pity without end? O make me Thine forever; and should I fainting be, Lord, let me never, never outlive my love to Thee.
17.
Ride on! Ride on in majesty! Hark! all the tribes hosanna cry; O Savior meek, pursue Thy road with palms and scattered garments strowed. Ride on! Ride on in majesty! In lowly pomp ride on to die: O Christ, Thy triumphs now begin o'er captive death and conquered sin. Ride on! Ride on in majesty! The winged squadron of the sky look down with sad and wondering eyes to see the approaching sacrifice. Ride on! Ride on in majesty! In lowly pomp ride on to die; bow Thy meek head to mortal pain, then take, O God, Thy power, and reign.
18.
The day of resurrection! Earth, tell it out abroad; the Passover of gladness, the Passover of God. From death to life eternal, from this world to the sky, our Christ hath brought us over with hymns of victory. Our hearts be pure from evil, that we may see aright the Lord in rays eternal of resurrection light; and, listening to His accents, may hear, so calm and plain, His own "All hail!" and, hearing, may raise the victor strain. Now let the heavens be joyful, let earth the song begin, let the round world keep triumph, and all that is therein; let all things seen and unseen their notes of gladness blend, for Christ the Lord is risen, our joy that hath no end.
19.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! The strife is o'er, the battle done, the victory of life is won; the song of triumph has begun. Alleluia! The powers of death have done their worst, but Christ their legions hath dispersed: let shouts of holy joy outburst. Alleluia! The three sad days are quickly sped, Christ rises glorious from the dead: all glory to our risen Head! Alleluia! Lord, by Your wounds on Calvary from death's dread sting Your servants free, that we may live eternally. Alleluia! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
20.
Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Were you there when they nailed Him to the tree? Were you there when they nailed Him to the tree? Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they nailed Him to the tree? Were you there when they pierced Him in the side? Were you there when they pierced Him in the side? Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they pierced Him in the side? Were you there when they laid Him in the tomb? Were you there when they laid Him in the tomb? Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they laid Him in the tomb? Were you there when He rose up from the grave? Were you there when He rose up from the grave? Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when He rose up from the grave?
21.
When I survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince of Glory died, my richest gains I count but loss and pour contempt on all my pride. Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, save in the death of Christ my God; all the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to His blood. See, from His head, His hands, His feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down. Did e'er such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown? Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were a present far too small. Love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all.
22.
Doxology 00:42
Praise God from Whom all blessings flow! Praise Him, all creatures here below! Praise Him above, ye heavenly host! Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost! Amen.
23.
Gloria Patri 00:46
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen.
